Tick Control – How to Remove a Tick

Pests can cause problems in a wide range of areas, from homes and buildings to farms and ranches. They can damage crops and plants, spread disease and cause serious health hazards.

Do not crush or jerk the tick; this could release the fluids that could cause an infection. After removing the tick, clean the area and wash hands thoroughly.

Pulling A Tick Out

There are many different ways to remove a tick, but the best way is to use fine-tipped tweezers. Grab the tick’s head between your tweezers and pull it upward with steady, firm pressure.

Don’t twist or jerk the tick as you are trying to get it out, because this may cause its mouthparts to break off and stay in your skin.

Once you have the tick removed, wash your bite area with soap and water. Dispose of the body by putting it in alcohol, wrapping it tightly in tape, flushing it down the toilet, or placing it in a sealed container.

Regardless of how you remove the tick, you should save it for testing if you think it might be carrying a pathogen. It could help diagnose Lyme disease or other diseases. Generally, you should not keep it for longer than 30 days.

Embedded Ticks Removal

If you’ve found a tick embedded in your skin, it may be difficult to remove. However, it is essential to do so as soon as possible to minimize the risk of infection.

When removing an embedded tick, it’s important to use a clean pair of tweezers. Tweezers with fine-tipped tips are most effective.

Once you have gripped the tick with tweezers, use steady, even pressure to pull upwards from the skin. Don’t twist or jerk; that can cause the mouth parts to stay in the skin.

If you’re unable to remove the head of the tick using tweezers, you can try to dislodge it with a needle. A sterile needle is more difficult to pull out of your skin than tweezers, but it can work if you use it correctly.
